Preharvest factors affecting appearance

چکیده

The appearance of fresh fruits and vegetables is a primary criterion in making purchasing decisions. Product appearance is characterized by size, shape, form, color, condition and absence of defects. A wide range of preharvest factors can modulate the appearance of the harvested product. These include: (1) biological factors (pathological, entomological, animal); (2) physiological factors (physiological disorders, nutritional imbalances, maturity); (3) environmental/cultural factors (e.g. climate, weather, soils, water relations, light intensity); (4) mechanical damage; (5) extraneous matter (growing medium, vegetable matter, chemical residues); and (6) genetic variation and aberrations. Creating and/or maintaining production conditions that minimize undesirable product appearance is essential. While field grading during harvest is utilized to eliminate a significant portion of product with substandard appearance, minimizing the occurrence of inferior product can significantly increase net profit. © 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Preharvest factors affecting physiological disorders of fruit

Development of disorders during postharvest ripening and storage of fruit depends on a range of preharvest factors. The most obvious of these is maturity of fruit at harvest. However, a number of other factors may be just as important in ripening-related disorders and in determining how fruit respond to low temperatures or other imposed postharvest conditions. Fruiting position on the tree and ...

Preharvest Factors Influencing Postharvest Quality of Tropical and Subtropical Fruit

Climate/environment Rootstock/scion Planting design Pruning practices Pest management Irrigation Plant growth regulators Plant nutrition The goal for postharvest physiologists, whether they are working in basic or applied research, is to maximize the postharvest quality of horticultural commodities. Quality relates to several factors that can be commodity specific and mean different things to d...

Implications of fisheries-induced evolution for stock rebuilding and recovery

Worldwide depletion of fish stocks has led fisheries managers to become increasingly concerned about rebuilding and recovery planning. To succeed, factors affecting recovery dynamics need to be understood, including the role of fisheries-induced evolution. Here we investigate a stock's response to fishing followed by a harvest moratorium by analyzing an individual-based evolutionary model param...

Dietary interactions and interventions affecting Escherichia coli O157 colonization and shedding in cattle.

Escherichia coli O157 is an important foodborne pathogen affecting human health and the beef cattle industry. Contamination of carcasses at slaughter is correlated to the prevalence of E. coli O157 in cattle feces. Many associations have been made between dietary factors and E. coli O157 prevalence in cattle feces. Preharvest interventions, such as diet management, could reduce the fecal preval...
